Understanding Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization, commonly referred to as SEO, is the process of affecting the visibility of a website in a search engine (such as Google or Yahoo). Basically, if you have good SEO, your website ranks higher in search engines, making it easier for people to find you.

Main Benefits of SEO:

Effective SEO results in top search engine ranking that bring increased premium targeted visitors. Premium visitors are on a mission to find a product or service, so they come prequalified, with a high likelihood of converting.

Great search placement is key to online success

  • More than 55% of all internet purchases begin with a search engine
  • More than 93% do not look past the first 2 pages – RANK MATTERS
  • 33% of users think that if a company has a top ranking, it must be a leader in its field
  • Google dominates in % of searches conducted online

Tips for improving your SEO:

Write good content:

  • Writing quality content helps the most
  • Researching keywords people use to find your content
  • Using the keywords in the content
  • Making content engaging
  • Ensuring content is fresh

Use keywords strategically:

  • Relevancy: are the keywords found on the page/title tag/description/etc.?
  • Location: are keywords high up on the page? In headings? Different formats?
  • Density/frequency: how frequent are the keywords & synonyms used on the page? (good match = 7% of the words matching the query)

Paid versus Organic search results:

There are basically two ways that people will find your website. The first is through paid advertisements: you place an ad online, and when someone clicks on it, they end up on your website. Organic means that you did not pay for someone to visit your site; they found it on their own.

With organic search results, people use a search engine to research a certain topic. If your website is “optimized” for that topic (it has good SEO), it may appear in the search results. They click on the link, and voila, they are directed to your website.

In Conclusion:

Whether you have a website or blog, there is no point in having one if nobody visits it. Paid advertising has its limits, and if your marketing budget is also limited, you’ll need great SEO to drive visitors to your website.

Remember: use specific keywords in all your posts and webpages to improve your SEO, and publish new and good quality content frequently. Those two habits will improve your SEO exponentially over time.
